Izquierdoz sparked controversy in the Copa Libertadores semifinals; the arbitrations that “helped” Boca

Santos Club is not the only Brazilian club that has been the victim of a dubious refereeing job in the matches against Boca Juniors. We present other cases

Santos left La Bombonera furious at the work of Chilean referee Roberto Tobar, who ignored Izquierdoz’s alleged penalty on Marinho. But Santos FC is not the only one in this complaint. There are at least six other cases in which Brazilian clubs have complained of “theft” in duels against Boca Juniors.

Palmeiras is the one who “leads” this particular ranking. There were two cases that annoyed the fans and especially the players who were in the duels for Libertadores in 2000 and 2001.

In the first case, they lost the title to Boca, at Morumbí, in a game in which there were two penalties for the alviverde team. In the second, a two-goal draw at Bombonera, there was a questionable penalty in favor of the Argentines and a penalty that did not score for the Palmeiras.

This long list highlights a case that took place in 2013, the year in which Boca Juniors eliminated Corinthians in the round of 16.

Paraguayan arbitration Carlos Amarilla from Pacaembu was highly questioned, with two goals scored by Alvinegro and two clear penalties without scoring.

Two years after the game, a sound was played in which Julio Grondona, then president of the Argentine Football Association, discussed the election of the judge with Abel Gnecco, AFA’s representative on the Conmebol Refereeing Committee.

“I was talking to Alarcón and he said, ‘Are you looking for Amarilla in Argentina? Gnecco says to Grondona, who replies: “Look, if you don’t know, yes. Put it on and stop bothering me. Alarcón, put Amarilla on and stop shooting at me.”

Returning to last Wednesday’s match, Santos left La Bombonera presenting an official complaint to Conmebol regarding the refereeing activity of the Chilean Rooberto Tobar.

Regarding the alleged offense, the former referee and commentator for Disney sports channels, Carlos Eugenio Simón, said that: “In the protocol it is established that the referee will see the game. I am curious to hear the sound from the VAR room”.

Conmebol released the audio on Thursday (7), in which the referees consider it a “normal game” and say that Marinho threw himself on the grass after Izquierdoz’s contact. Even so, Santos will formalize the complaint.
