Italy recorded 627 coronavirus deaths in the last day, the worst figure since January 5 (649), the Ministry of Health reported today, as the country tries to resist the pandemic by extending restrictions throughout April.
The number of deaths, which is a strong recovery compared to recent days, has risen to 112,374 deaths since the emergency began in Italy in February 2020.
Italy is the sixth country in the world with the highest number of deaths, after the United States (556,561), Brazil (336,947), Mexico (204,985), India (166,177) and the United Kingdom (127,126), according to the Johns Hopkins Institute.
In Italy, the regions with the most deaths due to COVID-19 are Lombardy, the epicenter of the crisis in the country and accumulating over 31,000 deaths, followed by Emilia-Romagna (12,246), Veneto (10,837) and Piedmont (10,560), all in north.
The new infections registered in the last 24 hours in Italy are 13,708, almost double compared to yesterday, although many more diagnostic tests were performed, 339,939, after the Easter weekend and last Monday’s holiday.
Despite this, new infections are considerably lower than those recorded last week, often over 20,000 a day.
In Italy, 3,700,393 people were infected during the entire pandemic.
On the other hand, the pressure in hospitals is decreasing and of the more than half a million people with SARS-CoV-2, the vast majority are isolated in their homes with almost no symptoms, while 23,999 are hospitalized, 81 less than yesterday .
In Italy, a total of 3,593,223 people have already been immunized with the two doses of Pfizer / BionTech vaccine, Moderna and AstraZeneca, mainly medical staff and those over 80 years of age.
In order to take advantage of the light respite that the virus gives Italy, the Government has decided to reopen today’s schools until the first year of secondary education (12 years) and in the areas with the lowest data, known as “red zones”.
Italy will also maintain strong restrictions until April 30 to reduce coronavirus, and no region will be classified as a mild or “yellow” risk, but all will be either at a medium or high alert level, with limitations such as closing the bars.
