It is “inexplicable” that some US states are withdrawing restrictions as Covid-19 continues to infect tens of thousands of Americans every day, Dr. Anthony Fauci said Wednesday.

Texas and Mississippi moved this week to end statewide mask warrants.

“It’s inexplicable why you want to retire now,” Fauci told CNN.
“I understand the need to return to normalcy, but you will not retire unless you completely reject public health guidelines – especially when dealing with 55,000 to 70,000 infections a day in the United States,” he said. he added. “It’s a very, very big baseline.”

Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the administration’s guidance on pandemic precautions is not arbitrary.

“We know that these interventions work. It is very clear,” Fauci said. “When you implement them, you see that the cases decrease. When you withdraw, the cases increase.”
