Acer has reportedly fallen victim to a massive ransomware attack, in which hackers demand $ 50 million to release stolen company data. Bleeping Computer reported Friday. However, the company did not publicly confirm the attack, vaguely stating that “companies like us are constantly under attack.”

According to Bleeping Computer, the attack was carried out by the REvil hacker group, who announced on its leak site that it had violated Acer. As proof, the group shared images with the alleged files they had stolen, which include financial spreadsheets, bank balances and bank communications. ITrue, this would be the greatest attempt at redemption ever he asked. In 2020, the largest redemption attempt daily was $ 30 million, Reported ZDNet.

REvil is the same group related to Travelex attack in 2020. Reports at the time indicated that the group had demanded a $ 6 million ransom. Eventually, the company allegedly paid the REvil group about $ 2.3 million worth bitcoin.

Gizmodo contacted Acer to confirm the report and request comments. The company did not admit whether it was the victim of an attack. He acknowledged that he had reported recent “abnormal situations” to the authorities.

“Acer regularly monitors its IT systems, and most cyber attacks are well defended. Companies like us are constantly under attack, and we have reported recent abnormalities observed to law enforcement and data protection authorities in several countries, ”Acer said. “We have continuously improved our cybersecurity infrastructure to protect business continuity and the integrity of our information.”

Acer added that it urged companies and organizations to adhere to cybersecurity best practices and “be vigilant of any network activity anomalies.”

Bleeping Computer reported that it, as well as the French outlet LeMagIT, discovered the Ransomware REvil sample used in the Acer attack. The outlet also analyzed the redemption note and conv. victimersation with hackers, which Bleeping Computer says confirms that the attack was on Acer. Hackers have it’s said he gave Acer until March 28 to pay the ransom.

Some experts told the media that the breach could be linked to a Microsoft Exchange server on the Acer domain, which REvil hackers recently targeted. It is unclear whether the hackers exploited Microsoft Exchange Security Vulnerabilities revealed earlier this month, about which early estimates compromised about 30,000 American organizations.

However, the number of compromised entities worldwide could be much higher, with some reports stating that there is at least 60,000 known victims all over the globe.
