Israel Adesanya fries Paulo Costa after “hangover” excuse

Israel Adesanya is quite amused by Paulo Costa’s latest apology for losing to UFC 253.

Costa (13-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC), who came up short in his attempt to win middleweight title Adesanya (20-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) with a TKO defeat in the second round in September , said recently revealed in a video on YouTube in which he drank wine the night before stepping into the octagon to help him sleep.

This decision was eventually made, Costa said, because he got into a “hangover” fight and claims he fought for both drinking and lack of adequate sleep. Adesanya found it pretty funny, he told MMA Junkie on Monday.

“It’s just funny,” Adesanya told MMA Junkie. “There are certain things I did before some struggles in the past, in which I learned my mistakes, but I went in and did my job. Some people are not cut out for this lifestyle. ”

For her part, Adesanya says she was somewhat puzzled as to why Costa would come out and make that statement now, more than five months after the fight.

Costa pressed hard for a rematch after UFC 253. The Brazilian said he would “kill” Adesanya if he repeated it and is not happy with the way the champion broke his result in front of the fierce fight.

Adesanya said the attitude will not be beneficial for Costa’s career. The “Eraser” is currently set to fight Robert Whittaker at the main UFC Fight Night event on April 17, and a victory would put him back in the conversation for another title.

However, if she wants a second fight to be different, Adesanya said Costa needs to correct himself both mentally and physically.

“I will tell you one thing: the best thing he can do in his position is to accept that he has lost,” Adesanya said. “She is OK. The fact that he is still trying to make all these excuses will only make him worse in the long run. He apologizes because his ego can’t handle the fact that the “Weak Clown” screamed at his ass, then beat him twice.

“Just swallow your ego. You got your ass kicked. Return to the board and reevaluate the entire game. You can’t just rely on that, because if you do – that’s my advice – you’ll never get far in life or in this game. ”

Whether or not a rematch is in the future remains to be seen. For now, however, Adesanya is focusing on something bigger than Costa.

“The Last Stylebender” will try to add the lightweight title to his resume with the middle belt, when he will challenge Jan Blachowicz (27-8 MMA, 10-5 UFC) in the main event of UFC 259, which takes place Saturday at UFC Apex in Las Vegas and airs pay-per-view after ESPN broadcasts and first ESPN + previews.
