Although Washington signed Ryan Fitzpatrick and extended Taylor Heinicke this season, the team remains in need in the most important position of the sport. The franchise may be ready to trade for a quarterback.
Ron Rivera is interested in getting up for a passerby, according to Tony Pauline of ProFootballNetwork.com. Washington is believed to be up to par Trey Lance, but there may be a catch. WFT isn’t too interested in giving up a mountain of draft capital to climb from No. 19 to No. 4, but Pauline notices that a quarterback sliding around No. 8 would be appealing to the franchise. However, an ascent to slot no. 4 of the Falcons should not be ruled out altogether.
Three QBs will disappear in 3rd place, and the Falcons are in the game to select fourth. No draft has begun, with four consecutive defenders coming off the board, and the Falcons are also interested in tackling the board. Many believe, however, that Atlanta will choose Kyle Pitts. The Bengals will not take a quarterback and do not seem too interested to trade from slot no. 5. Trading in front of the Broncos (no. 9) could overtake Washington and it will be interesting to see if the Panthers (no. 8) press the trigger on the prospect of the fourth or fifth QB. This scenario is not off the table, even after the purchase by Carolina Sam Darnold, although the Panthers now expect a team that could trade.
Washington may also have to compete with the Bears, although Pauline adds that, in addition to rumors of trading, they will be in the mix for a second-round quarterback. The cost of the 49ers was two future options in the first round and a third round in 2021 to climb nine slots this year. If one of the first five QBs slides to the bottom of the top 10, this would still require considerable transport – given the value that these passers-by carry. Lance not being the choice of the 49ers at 3 could cause Washington to make its move. Justin Fields it is expected to be available beyond number 3.
Rivera said Friday that the team’s off-season moves – such as Fitzpatrick’s signing, Curtis Samuel and William Jackson – created more flexibility in the project.
“I think [execs] Martini [Mayhew] and Marty [Hurney] and their boys have helped us put ourselves in a position where we really need to look at writing the best player available, but always keeping in mind what we feel is the real need.Rivera told NBC Sports Washington. “I think they really helped us with what our office did and what we could do in the free agency. I think we broke free because of what they did. ”
Washington signed Fitzpatrick for 2021; will turn 39 later this year. Heinicke is signed until 2022 and Kyle Allen could be under the team’s control in the ’22 season as well. It is attached to an ERFA offer. However, none of these players is a long-term option. Washington, after missing the last two efforts to acquire a real QB solution (Alex Smith, Dwayne Haskins), might be eager to address the issue in Rivera’s second project.
