iPhone 13 is expected to feature an upgraded ultra-wide camera with significantly improved low light performance

All four iPhone 13 models will have an improved Ultra Wide camera lens with a wider ƒ / 1.8 aperture compared to ƒ / 2.4 on the iPhone 12 models, said Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Thomas O ‘ Malley in an investor note shared with MacRumors.

In a note to investors with TF International Securities in November, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also claimed that the Ultra Wide lens will be updated to a ƒ / 1.8 aperture, but only on iPhone 13 Pro models, so there is conflicting information on exactly how many models will receive the lens update. Kuo expects the updated Ultra Wide lens to extend to the rest of the iPhone’s peak line in the second half of 2022.

A wider aperture would allow more light to pass through the lens, switching from an aperture of ƒ / 2.4 to ƒ / 1.8 which could lead to significantly improved performance in low light when shooting in Ultra Wide on iPhone 13 models.

Barclays also claimed that the updated Telephoto lens of the iPhone 12 Pro Max will extend to the standard iPhone 13 Pro, with a focal length of 65 mm and a ƒ / 2.2 aperture, a move that is expected to benefit the chip maker Cirrus Logic, given that it would provide Apple with a camera controller for an additional iPhone model starting later this year.

Apple is expected to stay with the same display sizes and camera configurations for the iPhone 13 range, including 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch models with dual-lens cameras and 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch models with cameras with triple lenses. Other rumored camera features include expanding the LiDAR scanner and stabilizing the image by changing the sensor to multiple models.
