IPad and MacBook models with OLED displays that are rumored to be launched in 2022

Apple plans to launch new iPad and MacBook models with OLED displays in 2022, according to industry sources quoted by the Taiwanese supply chain publication DigiTimes. The information was shared in the “Before going to the press” section, with the site’s payment screen, so there are no further details, but the full report should be published by tomorrow.

OLED iPad Pro and MacBook Pro

Apple has gradually expanded its adoption of OLED displays, starting with the Apple Watch in 2015. Two years later, the iPhone X became the first iPhone with an OLED display, and since then Apple has expanded its display technology to the full range of iPhone 12. Screens OLEDs have several advantages over LCD screens, including higher brightness, improved contrast with deeper blacks, wider viewing angles, and more.

Macs and iPads still use LCDs, probably due in part to the fact that large OLED screens are expensive to manufacture. State-of-the-art OLED TVs often cost thousands of dollars, for example, with LCD versions with equal screen sizes, usually at much cheaper prices.

In November, the Korean site Elecul reported that Apple plans to launch new iPad Pro models with OLED screens in the second half of 2021 and claimed that Samsung and LG are already developing screens. However, this rumor was soon followed by a research note from Barclays analysts who said that an iPad with OLED display does not seem to be working for this year.

In a research note shared with MacRumors in December, Barclays analysts said it was unlikely that an iPad with an OLED screen would be launched as early as 2022, based on their conversations with Apple suppliers in Asia.

Assuming that Apple actually intends to launch iPad and MacBook models with OLED displays, 2022 certainly sounds like a more likely time frame, as Apple is expected to launch iPad and MacBook models with LCD displays with Mini-LED lighting this year. and it would certainly be quick for Apple to change display technologies twice in the same year.

Given that Mini-LED backlit displays offer many of the same benefits as OLEDs, such as high brightness and high contrast, one possibility is that Apple will eventually use a mix of both display technologies in the iPad range and Mac depending on prices. Apple’s exact plans remain to be seen, but there is growing evidence that OLED displays will be involved in some quality in the next year or two.
