LIMA (Sputnik) – Peru’s private health system has collapsed as if assisting the public in the care of patients affected by COVID-19, said the Peruvian Society of Intensive Care Medicine (Sopemi).

“The collapse of the health system continues. We do not have the capacity of the ICU bed system [unidades de cuidados intensivos], hospital beds are also collapsed. As for the private part, it can no longer support the public sector, because it has neither capacity nor reserves, they are no longer isolation, “said Jesús Valverde, president of Sopemi, in statements to RPP on local radio.

Likewise, the head of Sopemi pointed out that currently about 4,000 beds are needed to cover the usual demand of the hospital and that there are 2,000 people on the waiting list to access an ICU bed.

On the other hand, Valverde said that the number of doctors admitted was “significantly reduced” after being vaccinated against coronavirus as a priority.

To date, Peru has 55,489 deaths from respiratory disease and 1,659,707 infected.
