Illinois Star Guardian Ayo Dosunmu is gone indefinitely after suffering a facial injury, the school announced on Thursday.
Dosunmu was injured in Tuesday’s loss to Michigan. He was harshly criticized by Spartan freshman Mady Sissoko at the end of the game; Sissoko was evacuated after being hit by a flagrant foul of 2. However, Dosunmu did not leave the game.
Brad Underwood did not provide a specific timeline for Dosunmu’s return, but said he will not play against Nebraska on Thursday night.
“Ayo is eager to play,” Underwood said. “We are hopeful for his return to our range.”
Dosunmu is a candidate for the wood award, averaging 21.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists. The 6-foot-5 guard is number 35 in ESPN’s NBA draft.
Illinois, the No. 5 in this week’s AP poll, saw its seven-game winning streak collapse against Michigan. Fighting Illini are 16-6 overall, 12-4 in the Big Ten.
