CHICAGO (WLS) – Illinois public health officials reported 1,959 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 22 deaths on Monday.

There have been 1,304,200 total cases of COVID, including 21,685 deaths in the state since the pandemic began.

COVID Vaccine: Chicago opens vaccinations to all residents 16 years and older

As Chicago joins the rest of Illinois in expanding vaccine eligibility as widely as possible, the state appears to be changing its allocation strategy, sending fewer vaccines to the state area and more to the Chicago area.

Although discontinuation of Johnson & Johnson vaccine has taken a supply blow, total allocations for the Chicago area are on the rise.

DuPage County is set to receive a record high of more than 44,000 initial doses this week, 85 percent more than its previous weekly high. It comes after it was announced that the state is sending Chicago over 50,000 doses.

“It’s my expectation that as we start getting more vaccine, more and more people, including the youngest, will get the vaccine,” said Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot.

Where does that supply come from? After months of allocating the vaccine according to the county’s population, state data show that more than 60 counties, most in the lower part of the state, receive zero doses from the state this week.

On Sunday night, 2,128 patients in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of these, 491 patients were in intensive care and 227 patients with COVID-19 were on ventilators.
