It offers several handy features that make it a must-have app on your phone, regardless of operating system, including cross-platform support, which allows iPhone users to chat with their Android friends who don’t have access to iMessage.
Unfortunately, some devices will not be able to run the application starting next year. On Friday, January 1, WhatsApp will no longer work on some smartphones, including certain Android and iPhone devices.

iPhones that do not run at least iOS 9 and Android phones that do not have a software version newer than Android 4.0.3 will not run WhatsApp or will not be able to provide the full WhatsApp experience early next year, on News 18. Last year, the same thing happened when Facebook ended support for devices running iOS 8 and Android 2.3.7.
To avoid losing access to WhatsApp, you need to make sure you are upgrading to the latest available software version supported by iPhone or Android. This should be a simple process for most iPhone users, as Apple has always been much better than Google when it comes to making sure all their devices are supported with software updates years after launch. Even so, iPhone 4 and older devices will not run newer iOS versions. But if you’re still using a 10-year-old phone, we recommend switching to a new device anyway.
For Android users, it’s more complicated. Some of the older Android phones that may still be in use may not be running the required Android version because smartphone vendors have stopped updating them. Even so, you should still use a phone that is almost 10 years old. Some of the affected devices include Galaxy S2 and Droid Razr.
If you’re not sure which operating system you’ve installed on your old device, you should go to the Settings app on your iPhone or Android and search for software information. Go to settings > General > Software update on your iPhone settings > About the phone on Android to find out if a new version of the operating system is available.
If this is not possible, the only solution is to get a new phone. You will be able to transfer all your WhatsApp chats to the new device, so you don’t have to worry about losing data in the update process.
