Ice is reported on some roads in the Houston area as winter weather conditions sweep through the region.

A major winter storm is expected to bring frigid rain and cold temperatures to many parts of Texas in the coming days. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings or watches for most counties in Texas. The Houston area is said to have the coldest temperatures in 30 years.

Amid the wintry weather, officials urge Texans not to hit the road.

“There’s a lot of ice and snow in our state this morning and more to come,” said James Bass, director of the Texas Department of Transportation. ‘If you can stay at home, stay at home. If you absolutely must drive, SLOW DOWN and drive into conditions with headlights on – to see and be seen by others. “

Several crashes were reported in the Houston area Sunday morning.

“Please slow down,” Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on social media. “Several minor accidents have been reported since around 6am this morning and conditions will only get worse. The crashes were all at 290, in both directions from about SH-99 to 2920. In all those crashes, cars slid into walls. “
