COVID-19 cases are on the rise in El Salvador, but do not seem relevant to many traveling in search of Christmas and New Year shopping. The streets are crowded and people forget to apply health measures of distance to avoid infection.
Some vendors in downtown San Salvador said that “I don’t use masks because customers don’t understand me “, an action that could endanger the health of Salvadorans who arrive at that place.

On Rubén Darío Street, a lot of people are seen walking without distance, and some pedestrians say with fear: “Because there is no pandemic”, when you see the crowd.
But not all salespeople work without a mask. There are a few small stalls that have placed signs that require mandatory use for family care. Others insist with expressions: “Put on the mask, the worms are hungry.”

A few days ago, the Minister of Health, Francisco Alabí, said that “there is still a slight increase in confirmed cases”. At the time, epidemiologist Ricardo Lara questioned the increase in the number of cases due to the lack of a government prevention plan that would focus on curative rather than preventive strategies.
“You can’t talk about a second wave, because we haven’t finished leaving the first wave; what has existed is an incalculable lack of epidemiological control, because they have dedicated themselves to hiding information, they have dedicated themselves to curative management and they have not done anything preventive “, Lara asked.
