Humane Society gets 250 guinea pigs from an overwhelmed owner

The Oregon Humane Society in Portland has admitted 250 guinea pigs from an overwhelmed pet owner

PORTLAND, Oregon – The Oregon Humane Society in Portland has admitted 250 guinea pigs from an overwhelmed pet owner.

It is not known exactly how the unidentified person in Lane County became overrun with the furry little rodents, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported. But experts say it can be difficult to determine a guinea pig’s sex – and they are best kept in pairs – because they keep each other company.

Oregon Humane Society spokeswoman Laura Klink said a timeline for adoption will be set in the coming days. “We would certainly like to see some of these guys go home in pairs, be they two men or women. But of course we are going to give a lot of advice about how quickly they can reproduce if you have a male and a female together, ”says Klink.

The Oregon Humane Society’s Cat and Kitten Intake Center has closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, so it was able to house all guinea pigs. Because there are so many, the association also partners with the Greenhill Humane Society and Lane County Animal Services in Eugene.

There will be a special process for people who want to adopt the guinea pigs, and officials said the small animal specialists will work with potential adopters to make sure they are a good fit.
