How to fix the Xbox Series X / S controller disconnect error

Microsoft finally fixes annoying controller disconnect error that has affected Xbox Series X / S since launch and tthe patch is included in March 2021 firmware update released this week. Microsoft does not directly mention bug fixes in its ad posting, but Xbox program management director Jason Ronald confirmed via Twitter that the patch “also fixes many of the controller disconnections reported by players.”

If you’re one of the many players dealing with this issue, be sure to immediately install the March 2021 firmware update. To manually update your Xbox Series X / S:

  1. Press the Xbox button on the controller to call up the guide menu.
  2. Go to Profile and system> Settings> System> Updates.
  3. Select “Console update available” to download the new version. If he writes “No console update available” then your Xbox already has the latest firmware available.

If you prefer Xbox to automatically download future updates as soon as they’re ready, turn it on “Keep the console up to date” and the Updates menu. Doing so will ensure that you get all the new features – and important bug fixes – as soon as possible.

While fixing disconnect errors is an important part of the Xbox Series X / S firmware patch in March, it’s worth installing the update even if you’ve been spared the controller connection issues.
