Houston Weather: The strong cold front brings widespread rain to NYE

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – Another warm and pleasant day is coming to southeast Texas on Tuesday. High temperatures are expected to exceed in the mid-1970s. We may see a lost shower or two, but most of us will stay dry.

Our next weather system will make its way to Texas on Wednesday and Thursday. This will give us a chance of widespread rain and will also bring colder temperatures.

Look: The major storm is about to end 2020

When will the next storm hit Houston?

Our final 2020 storm system arrives on Wednesday with storms and a strong cold front on Thursday morning.

When will it rain and how much will we get?

Showers and thunderstorms will be possible on Wednesday and Thursday, with the highest chance of widespread rain on Thursday. Current expectations are that most will pick up 1-2 “of rain, with isolated spots that will have 3-5”. Flooding the street will be a possibility.

Will we have severe weather?

Severe weather is possible, but the chances seem low at the moment. If we see a severe storm, the main threats will be harmful wind gusts and heavy hail.

What is the New Year weather forecast for Houston?

New Year’s Eve will bring us cold, windy and humid weather, but we expect the rain to clear before midnight. Temperatures are actually expected to drop during the day after the cold front has moved. We should look at the temperatures in the 40s in the afternoon. At midnight on New Year’s Day, temperatures will likely be in the upper 30s and lower 40s, with a wind cooling factor close to freezing.

Wait, you said “freeze.” Will it be snowing ?!

Snow seems unlikely for Houston, but chances are the snowflakes will fly somewhere in Texas on New Year’s Eve. At this time it seems most likely along and west of the I-35 corridor. Where it snows depends on the exact tracking of the statewide storm system, so we can’t completely rule it out for Southeast Texas yet.

So you’re saying there’s a chance of snow in Houston?

Yes, there is a very zero, very small chance, but don’t raise your hopes yet.
