Look: Cold, wet, windy New Year’s Eve in Houston, possible snow in parts of Texas
When will the next storm hit Houston?
Our final 2020 storm system arrives on Wednesday with storms and a strong cold front on Wednesday night.
When will it rain and how much will we get?
Showers and thunderstorms are possible anytime on Wednesday, but most likely show up in the evening and overnight. As this weather system seems to slow down, a cold rain could linger on Thursday after sunrise. Current expectations are that most will pick up 1-2 “of rain, with isolated spots that will have 3-5”. Street floods are possible Wednesday night.
Will we have severe weather?
Severe weather is possible, but still unlikely. Strong winds would be our biggest threat if severe weather materializes.
What is the New Year weather forecast for Houston?
New Year’s Eve will bring us cold, windy and humid weather, but we expect the rain to clear before midnight. The temperature will probably remain blocked in the 1940s all day. At midnight on New Year’s Day, temperatures will likely be in the upper 30s and lower 40s, with a wind cooling factor close to freezing.
Wait, you said “freeze.” Will it be snowing ?!
Snow seems unlikely for Houston, but chances are the snowflakes will fly somewhere in Texas on New Year’s Eve. At this time it seems most likely along and west of the I-35 corridor. Where it snows depends on the exact tracking of the statewide storm system, so we can’t completely rule it out for Southeast Texas yet.
So you’re saying there’s a chance of snow in Houston?
Yes, there is a very zero, very small chance, but don’t raise your hopes yet.
