House Democrats file impeachment charges, accusing Trump of ‘inciting insurrection’

Washington – House Democrats unveiled an impeachment resolution accusing President Trump of “instigating an uprising” during the January 6 attack on the Capitol, bringing the president closer less than two weeks before leaving office.

The deposition solution was led by Democratic representatives David Cicilline, Jamie Raskin, and Ted Lieu, and has the backing of at least 210 Democrats. The bill says the president “was involved in serious crimes and crimes by inciting violence against the United States government.”

The resolution cites Mr Trump’s speech to supporters Jan.6 near the White House, before the crowd moved to the Capitol.

So instigated by President Trump, members of the crowd he addressed, including in an effort to interfere with the Joint Session’s solemn constitutional duty to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election, wrongfully violated and Capitol destroyed, injured and killed law enforcement personnel, threatened members of Congress, the vice president and convention personnel, and participated in other violent, deadly, destructive and inflammatory acts, ”the article said.

A separate resolution tabled by Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar on Monday includes a second allegation of abuse of power in connection with the Capitol attack. An aide to Omar said the House leadership is considering including both charges in a final impeachment resolution.

Meanwhile, House Republicans blocked a measure by Raskin calling on Vice President Mike Pence to convene the cabinet and call for the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said the House will vote on the measure on Tuesday and may proceed with impeachment if Pence does not act.

Under the 25th Amendment, the Vice President can assume power as Acting President if a majority of the cabinet determines that the President is “incapable of fulfilling the powers and duties of office”.
