DeJoy, a GOP megadonor who previously ran a logistics company, angered Democrats shortly after he became postmaster general last year to implement postal service cost-cutting measures that led to delays in mail delivery.

In response to the backlash at the time, DeJoy announced in August last year that he would discontinue changes to the postal service’s operations until after the November election “to avoid any impact on election correspondence.” Trump has been trying for months to cast doubt on the reliability of postal voting, as many people have sought alternatives to in-person voting during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But it looks like DeJoy is considering further operational changes. The Washington Post reported last week that DeJoy is preparing to designate all first-class e-mails for a three- to five-day delivery window, instead of allowing a separate layer to deliver e-mail in two days. Only 38% of first-class emails were delivered on time at the end of last year.

In response to the Washington Post report, Connolly, who chairs a House Oversight subcommittee with jurisdiction over the postal service, last week also called on Biden to “remove” immediately and replace the entire governing council to pave the way for DeJoy’s removal.

The Biden administration said Biden intends to fill vacancies with officials “reflecting its commitment to US postal service workers,” but did not yet provide a timetable.

Meanwhile, the House Oversight and Reform Committee is scheduled to hold a hearing next Wednesday with DeJoy and Bloom on legislative reforms for the postal service.
