Former President of the Republic, Hipólito Mejía, expressed doubts that the country has enough funds to build a fence that covers all areas of the Dominican-Haitian border.
However, he indicated that, as this is an action announced by the current president, Luis Abinader, he respects it.
“I don’t think there are enough funds to complete (the gate), the three hundred odd kilometers, but if it’s a decision of the president, I respect it … I don’t know the details of the latest state security, I’m respectful,” he said. He.
In addition, Mejía pointed out possible weaknesses in the fence plan, indicating that in cities such as Luperón, the province of Puerto Plata and Pedernales, people could enter the sea illegally.
“I know the border and it is a reality in all countries, I have always spoken it clearly enough. We can have gates, but we have Luperón and Pedernales, which is offshore, it is a problem “, said the former head of state.
The fence was originally announced by Abinader during his speech last month.
In his speech, he indicated that in the second half of this year a “double perimeter fence” will start to be built in the most conflicting sections of the dividing line and a simple one for the rest.
He also assured that it will have motion sensors, facial recognition cameras, radars and infrared systems.
Where would you start?
The construction of the fence would begin in Pedernales, after a commission from the Ministries of Defense and Economy, Planning and Development visited the area for an uprising on the border between Pedernales and the Haitian community in Anse-au-pitre.
