Anti-Atlas Mountains, Morocco: The swirling shades of the Anti-Atlas Mountains were captured by ASTER (Thermal Emission Radiometer and Advanced Reflection in Space) on NASA’s Terra satellite. Formed about 80 million years ago, the mountains formed when Africa and Eurasia collided, resulting in a diverse composition of limestone, sandstone, gypsum and granite rocks.

Qinghai Lake, China: NASA’s EarthKAM captured this surreal image of Lake Qinghai – China’s largest. Located on the Tibetan Plateau, the lake stretches for 1,667 square miles and reaches a depth of 84 meters.

Empty neighborhood, Saudi Arabia: NASA’s EarthKAM captured a beautiful intersection between the outskirts of As Sulayyil Sulayel and the Rub ‘al Khali desert in Saudi Arabia. Also known as the Empty Neighborhood, it is the largest contiguous sandy desert in the world.

Grand Canyon National Park, United States: A wonder of nature, America’s most famous national park stretches for 277 miles and is one kilometer deep. From NASA’s Terra spacecraft, the canyon’s red rock veins look like a work of art.

Patagonia, Chile: NASA uses ASTER images to monitor declining glaciers as an indicator of global warming. In the image, an ice sheet from Northern Patagonia shows assigned colors – with red vegetation – to measure the size of the glacier over time.

The Great Chinese Wall: It stretches for more than 13,000 miles in northern China, it is believed that the Great Wall of China was built in the third century BC. The ancient fortification is now one of the most visited landmarks in the world. The Terra satellite made this image showing the northern province of Shanxi, where the wall is woven through the stiff mountains.

Rio Gurupi, Brazil: This EarthKAM image of Rio Gurupi in Brazil has an abstract look from space. Part of the Gurupi biological reserve, the river flows into an open sea delta, where a dynamic ecosystem includes dozens of islets, mangrove forests, dunes, lagoons and beaches.

Danube Biosphere Reserve, Ukraine: Being the longest river in the European Union, the Danube crosses 19 countries, including Germany, Austria, Germany, Hungary and Ukraine. Here, NASA’s Earth Observatory broke the Danube Delta, where the river flows into the Black Sea. The area is a United Nations World Heritage Site and a biodiversity center with over 300 species of birds.
