Health starts VacuTour to vaccinate the elderly against COVID-19

In the spirit of promoting the vaccination of thousands of older adults on the island, the Ministry of Health, in partnership with the VOCES Coalition for Immunization and Health Promotion, started the route, VacuTour COVID-19, Visit four congregations simultaneously and vaccinate 3,372 people from the Golden Age.

“Today we inject more than just a vaccine, we inject hope into our people. Faced with so much fear caused by the pandemic, we were able to give it a break and those who need it the most. Today we show again that when we come together, we can achieve better results. I am convinced that this is the beginning of a new phase in the vaccination of Puerto Rico that will be successful, ”said Secretary, Carlos Mellado López.

He also added, “For Governor Pierluisi, vaccination is a priority and we will continue to develop strategies that allow us to implement more flexible and proactive vaccination. I am grateful to VOCES and all the cooperation of the mayors of the visited municipalities and the municipal staff who helped us with the vaccination of our elderly, ”he said.

Today, people were affected by the appointment granted by the congregations in the Ricky Martin Foundation’s TAO Center, Cataño Convention Center,

Teatro América in Vega Baja and at the Guillermo Angulo Coliseum in Carolina.

“At VOCES, Coalition for Immunization and Health Promotion of PR, we thank the Department of Health for the trust we have placed in this alliance as a non-profit organization. Since we started vaccinating a month ago, we have vaccinated more than 15,000 older adults against COVID-19 and are ready to continue the VacuTour along with the Department of Health vaccination program. With the experience in mass and community vaccinations, we will provide access to immunization to more people with the respect and affection that characterizes us. Thanks to the municipalities and the Ricky Martin Foundation for participating in this initiative that has enabled us to influence more people in communities around their centers, ”said Lilliam Rodríguez Capó, CEO and founder of VOCES.

This initiative was joined by volunteers from the College of Surgeons of Puerto Rico, the College of Nursing, the Women Leaders Organization, students from NUC University and EDP College, and the Ricky Martin Foundation.

Dr. Antonia Coello Novello stressed that “our seniors are our priority. It is the most vulnerable population and is the industry with the highest death rate from COVID-19 contamination. To achieve herd immunity, more than 70%, preferably 85%, vaccinated humans would be required. When I look at the positivity of the elderly, it ranges from seventeen percent to 25 percent, so our older adults remain our priority. The Ministry of Health emphasized the use of the mask, physical distance and hand washing, while achieving full immunity to the vaccine.
