Health Secretary Carlos Mellado reported tonight that the box of COVID-19 vaccines found in Morovis were doses delivered to Walgreens Pharmacy under the federal contract for Long-term care centers.
“I have ordered an immediate inquiry into what happened to judge liability and to refer to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Justice or any other agency with jurisdiction.” said Mellado in written statements.
The secretary gave the Office of Health Research a 24-hour period to investigate and report on the 22 doses found in a cardboard box by a citizen.
“Managing the vaccine in an emergency requires all providers to act with the greatest possible responsibility,” he added.
In the complaint addressed to the Police, the citizen commented that inside the box was a white refrigerator, with syringes and a box of vaccines from the Modern Company.
Earlier, Mellado said he was “very upset” and “outraged” by the situation.
“We need to investigate and come to the final conclusions, because there is an urgent interest of the people of Puerto Rico to know what happened and that an explanation can be given to Puerto Rico,” he said in the afternoon.
