Harris moves into an official residence after a delay

Vice President Harris moved into her official residence at the Naval Observatory Tuesday evening after an initial delay due to repairs.

For the first time in our country’s history, Kamala Devi Harris, a daughter of immigrants, takes Marine 2 to her new home, the vice president’s residence, for the first time, ”tweeted Opal Vadhan, an assistant to Harris, after the vice president had returned from a trip to Chicago.

The building is located across the street from the White House and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and has traditionally been used to house visiting dignitaries.

The residence at 1 Observatory Circle was closed for repairs, including maintenance of the HVAC system, replacement of the chimney liners and renovations of some floors.

The Victorian home at the Naval Observatory was built in 1893 but was not designated as the vice president’s residence until 1974.

Unlike the White House, the residence offers a low level of privacy, due to its separate location from many federal buildings and the invisible view from the street.

The Navy is said to have provided much of the renovations, while the Vice President’s Residence Foundation can provide more visual changes, such as new artwork.
