Hamas is willing to accept fewer releases of prisoners in exchange for a report – report

Hamas may be willing to compromise on the number of prisoners released in a future exchange agreement with Israel, but Israeli officials do not hold out hope, security sources told Walla News on Sunday.

The news comes as security officials held talks with Hamas through Egyptian mediation about a week and a half ago on a possible prisoner exchange, according to the report.

The talks allegedly took place while Ghassan Alian, head of the IDF Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, started his new job about two weeks ago. According to the report, Egyptian intelligence officers met with Israeli security officials at the Erez crossing and then continued in the Hamas-controlled area to talk to officials from the terrorist group.

Discussions took place over several hours, especially regarding the conclusion of an exchange agreement.

Security officials have made it clear to Hamas that the terrorist group will have to compromise on the issue if they want economic progress, although representatives sent by Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader in Gaza, have insisted on the release of hundreds of terrorists. . Officials said “slow progress” was made at the end of the talks, according to Walla.

Israeli officials do not have high expectations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the head of the National Security Council, Meir Ben Shabbat, were briefed on the details of the talks.

The news comes after two rockets were fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip on Thursday night and Friday night, with the IDF responding by hitting a number of Hamas-targeted targets throughout the coastal enclave.

According to Walla, security officials are not yet sure who fired the missiles. According to Palestinian news WAFA, two Palestinians were injured during the IDF response on Friday night.

On Saturday, Palestinians marked Detainees’ Day, claiming that about 4,500 Palestinians are currently being held in Israeli jails and that more than 5,000 Palestinians were arrested at one point during the crown pandemic. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 367 Palestinian detainees have been infected with the virus, according to WAFA.

Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar reported on Saturday that Palestinians expect about two-thirds of Palestinians currently in Israeli jails to be released once a prisoner exchange agreement is reached.

Hamas official Mousa Mohammed Abu Marzook denied in late March that negotiations on a possible prisoner exchange had been renewed, according to Palestinian media.

Hamas currently has the remains of Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin, two soldiers allegedly killed in Operation Protective Edge in 2014, as well as two civilians, Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed.
