Gymnasiums sue San Diego – NBC 7 San Diego

The fast-growing San Diego-based club suing COVID-19 County has just added another 25 members.

Last week, 25 gyms filed a lawsuit against San Diego for the right to reopen. In accordance with the order of the state of residence at home and the purple restrictions that imposed it, gyms are not allowed to operate indoors.

Gyms like the East Village Boxing Club, which are sold as places for luxury training and wellness experiences – there is even a chandelier hanging above the boxing ring.

“It’s very hard to sell luxury when you work in a parking lot,” Boxing Club chief executive Artem Sharoshkin told NBC 7.

In March, like many gym owners in the county, Sharoshkin closed for months.

“At first we were told that we were literally endangering people’s lives,” Sharoshkin recalled.

But now, nine months after the pandemic, Sharoshkin is struggling to understand why his nearly $ 2 million facility should remain empty.

“I can’t tell you for a week that we didn’t think, ‘Will we be able to get through this month?’ “Sharoshkin said.

Now, the Boxing Club is among the 25 gyms that are suing the county in a new lawsuit.

“It’s enough already,” said one of the gym’s lawyers, Charlotte Najar. “You have to give up and stop interfering to let the owners of the room run their business.”

Najar said that at this time, the closure of gyms while allowing retailers to remain open is not only arbitrary, it is unfounded by the county’s own values.

“We say no,” Najar said. “We will not allow the opening of gyms. But will we allow the opening of liquor and tobacco stores? “

Between June and December, the county reported over 118,000 positive COVID-19 cases. After being reported, county workers interviewed more than 68,000 people who caught the virus and looked at possible community exposures.

Gymnasiums are probably linked to 277 cases, or 0.4%, of potential exposures. Compare it to retail, which has been linked to over 6,300 exposures, or 9.2%. Jobs claimed the highest possible exposures, with over 22,600 positive cases.

“Now that we have clear evidence to support what we thought we were starting, we need to reopen gyms,” Sharoshkin said.
