Speculation has come to an end. After previous rumors from the Dallas Cowboys that they were interested in bringing Aldon Smith back in 2021 to be relegated, the former All-Pro signed with the Seattle Seahawks in a one-year deal. Smith’s loss harms the Cowboy’s rotation on the defensive line, but also creates an opportunity for others to step up.
Guys like Dorance Armstrong, Bradlee Anae, the free agent who signed Tarell Basham and ERFA holder Ron’Dell Carter should do little with the possibility of increased roles. However, Smith’s departure opens up a huge chance for someone at the top of the depths to see more action, and this is Randy Gregory.
The Cowboys’ second-round pick in 2015 recorded 271 defensive shots in 2020. After just six shots in his first game of week 7 against the Washington football team, Gregory recorded at least 29 shots in six of the last nine games in who appeared, and made them all count.
Gregory finished with 21 tackles, 3.5 sacks and 12 quarterback shots, which were his second-highest total in all three categories since entering the NFL. He also added three forced punches, the most he has had in any season.
The former Nebraska Cornhusker now has the green light to become the top option at the defensive end on the right, opposite DeMarcus Lawrence. With only 28 NFL wear and tear on his body, Gregory should have no problem securing cargo and maximizing the immense talent that made him one of the most sought-after college passersby.
After a break of almost two years from the actual game action, Gregory looked great in 2020. With an increased role and a full off-season to prepare, he will have more opportunities to wreak havoc on the right edge. If successful, he could open things up for DeMarcus Lawrence, who will not see as many double teams. This will also help the inside of the Cowboys’ defensive line, as they will see more individual opportunities, with so much attention paid to the outside passage.
The Cowboys had arguably the worst defense in its history last season. Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn mentioned in January that he is trying to establish meaningful roles for players with unique aspects of their game. That being said, he should look for all possible ways to unleash Gregory, which would increase the Cowboy’s chances of having a respectable defense to match their high-powered offense.
