Government announces batch of one million Covid-19 vaccines from China to arrive in El Salvador on Sunday

This will be the first lot bought from the Chinese company SINOVAC and will consist of 1 million doses, said President Nayib Bukele.

One million vaccines from China will enter the national territory tomorrow, said President Nayib Bukele.

According to the president, the vaccines are part of a lot bought by the Government from Sinovac, considered one of the largest vaccine development laboratories in the world.

The time of entry of the vaccines has not yet been confirmed, however, the Ministry of Health and the press secretariat of the presidency have summoned the media to be present at 5:00 am at El Salvador International Airport.

The vaccination event will be attended by the Minister of Health, Francisco AlabĂ­, officials from the enlarged cabinet and the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in the country, Ou Jianhong.

A few hours earlier, Bukele had announced that the vaccination process for teachers in the public and private systems would begin on Tuesday, March 30, so that the new batch could be used to administer teachers’ doses before classes began.

Details of the cost or procurement procedures of this lot with Sinovac are unknown, as the government has put in reserve, and for a period of three to five years, all the information on the national vaccination plan already their procurement processes.

The health portfolio justified the action in paragraph D of Article 19 of the Law on Access to Public Information, which indicates that it is confidential information “that clearly endangers the life, safety or health of any person”.

On Monday, March 22, the third batch of vaccines from the Covax system arrived on the national territory, which contained over 51,400 doses from the developer Pfizer. At the time, the government had anticipated that they would be used to vaccinate members of the armed forces and police.

The day before, and always under the Covax mechanism, 33,600 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine arrived in the country, the same company that manufactured those that entered the country on February 17 in a first batch containing 20,000 doses of vaccine and that they were acquired by the government.

This batch, from China, becomes the largest in terms of the number of doses it will bring.

With this new batch that will arrive in the country tomorrow, El Salvador would reach the figure of over 1 million 100 thousand doses of vaccines received.
