GOP representatives are withdrawing the candidate’s support in response to comments about Chinese immigrants

California representatives Young Kim (R) and Michelle Steel (R) withdrew their approval of Texas congressional candidate Sery Kim (R) after saying she wanted “no Chinese immigrants at all.”

In a statement released Friday and shared with The Hill on Saturday, lawmakers said they “cannot in good conscience” continue to support Sery Kim, who is running to represent Texas’s 6th congressional district.

“As the first Korean-American Republican woman to serve in Congress, we want to strengthen and empower fellow AAPI members. [Asian American and Pacific Island] community that wants to serve their community, ”wrote the legislators.

Lawmakers said they urged Sery Kim to apologize, but noted that her words “contradicted what we stand for.”

“We will continue to speak out in support of our AAPI community,” she added.

The statement comes after Sery Kim attacked China and Chinese immigrants on Wednesday during a GOP candidate forum, said The Dallas Morning News

“I don’t want them here at all,” said Sery Kim. ‘They are stealing our intellectual property. They give us the coronavirus. They don’t hold themselves accountable. ”

After the audience cheered on her comments, Sery Kim followed up by saying, “Honestly, I can say that because I’m Korean.”

The comments came amid a spike in anti-Asian violence across America over the past year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The coronavirus is believed to originate in Wuhan, China.

The issue of anti-Asian hatred came to a feverish height last month when a shooting at several spas in Atlanta killed eight people, including six women of Asian descent.

Kim cheeses confirmed to CNN that she made the comments, but said they were directed against the Communist Party of China and not Asian Americans at all.
