All awards, delayed by the pandemic, are hard to predict, but Golden Globes are always the most volatile to predict.
This year, while the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is preparing for a live virtual version this Sunday, February 28, its 87 members have a lot to fight for.
They mourn the death of their leader, Italian journalist Lorenzo Soria, who was quoted posthumously in a recent Los Angeles Times article about the various ways in which the organization is influenced while paying different members.
“I have no choice,” said a source who told them. “He calls me every day to ask for more money.”
And so we return to a theme repeated in recent years, the racial one. Several categories in these awards are obviously white, including Best Drama, Comedy / Musical Actress and Supporting Actress.
This year, some of the best Oscar nominees for black films have not received nominations for Best Picture for Drama, including Queen King for “A Night in Miami” (Amazon), but she has three other nominations for awards and “Judas and the Black Messiah” (Warner Bros.) and “Ma Rainey’s Black Ass” with two. Surprisingly, Spike Lee’s “Yes 5 Bloods” was completely abandoned.
Ignoring other scandals, such as the nomination for Minari in a foreign film, this production being North American, but mostly spoken in Korean, here are my predictions for the 2021 Golden Globe.
“Mank,” David Fincher’s vision from a Hollywood past, he tops the list of six-time Golden Globe nominees, but others could be the winners.
