Go out with President Mariners for inappropriate comments

Seattle Mariners president and CEO Kevin Mather resigned Monday after posting a video expressing his views on organizational strategy and his thoughts on some players.

Mariners Chairman John Stanton said Mather’s comments were inappropriate and did not represent the franchise.

Mather’s resignation is effective immediately. Stanton will be the interim executive director and chairman of the team.

“There is no excuse for what has been said and I will not try to create one,” Stanton said in a press release. “I sincerely apologize on behalf of my team and partners to our players and fans. We need to be better and act better. “

Mather apologized late Sunday for his comments, which were made Feb. 5 at the Rotary Breakfast Club in Bellevue, Washington, and posted online over the weekend.

The video posted by the Rotary group is 46 minutes long and touches on areas of the organization’s status as it moves into the 2021 season – many of which Seattle headquarters would have preferred not to be made public.

“We have a lot of work to do to make up for that, and that work has already begun,” Stanton said.
