DETROIT – General Motors on Tuesday confirmed plans to produce a fully electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup at a new flagship assembly plant for electric vehicles that is under construction in Detroit.

The truck is part of a previously announced $ 2.2 billion investment in the plant to produce a series of next-generation electric vehicles starting later this year with a fully electric GMC Hummer pickup. Other vehicles planned for the installation include the recently unveiled Hummer EV SUV and a self-propelled multipassenger shuttle known as the Cruise Origin.

The factory, which GM renamed Factory Zero last year, with the zero sign of zero-emission electric vehicles that will be produced there, is essential to the manufacturer’s electric vehicle plans. It is the first of four installations in North America that GM has said will move from producing internal combustion engines to electric vehicles. It will be a testing ground and a testament to the company’s promise to produce profitable electric vehicles.

“Vehicles coming from Factory Zero will change the world and the way the world sees electric vehicles,” GM President Mark Reuss said in a statement. “The GMC Hummer EV SUV joins its established company in the field of true super-trucks, and Chevrolet will take everything loyal Chevy truck buyers like about Silverado – and more – and put it in an electric pickup that will it delights both retail and commercial customers. “

GM has refused to supply when the Chevrolet pickup truck goes into production at Factory Zero, a 4.5 million-square-meter plant on the outskirts of Detroit and bordering Hamtramck. The Hummer EV pickup will be launched this fall, followed by the Hummer EV SUV in early 2023.

The new Chevy Silverado EV will have a range of over 400 miles on a full charge, according to GM.

The announced vehicles are part of GM’s plan to launch 30 new electric vehicles globally by 2025, under a $ 27 billion investment in electric and autonomous vehicles in the meantime. By then, the company plans to sell at least 1 million electric vehicles annually – on its way to becoming a fully electric carmaker by 2035.

General Motors unveiled the GMC Hummer EV 2022 sports utility truck, or SUT, online and during national television shows on October 20, 2020.
