‘Glitch’ is causing some to be turned down with appointments of megasite from the Minute Maid Park vaccine

HOUSTON – A so-called “glitch” Saturday forced Houston health officials to turn down some people with appointments to get vaccinated at the megasite Minute Maid Park.

Several frustrated people called the KPRC 2 newsroom to report that after standing in line for a few hours, they were told that the stock of coronavirus vaccines on the mega site was exhausted. A video shared with KPRC 2 showed an employee announcing exactly that, saying there was a “glitch in the system where it was duplicating appointments”. The employee can be heard telling people to stay in line so they can reschedule their appointment and that they will be a priority for the next clinic.

In a tweet, Houston Health Department officials said they went through their scheduled appointments and had to stop accepting patients due to the sheer number of people still in line. Officials said staff members are recording the names of people in line who had appointments to be moved.

“We will investigate why we went through our scheduled appointments today and make sure it is corrected,” the tweet read. “We apologize for the inconvenience as we all work together to end this pandemic.”

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner tweeted Saturday night that 6,122 people had been vaccinated at the clinic.

People waited patiently in line at the Juice Box on Saturday to get their COVID-19 injection.

Ron Cowel said he was grateful to be able to get the vaccine at the clinic being converted.

“You don’t have popcorn, hot dogs, or beer, and no one starts the wave,” Cowel said. “But you get your vaccine, and I am very grateful to you.”

While some said they waited in line for a few hours, Donald Anderson said he was amazed at how fast it moved.

“I said, ‘Look at all these people,’” said Anderson. “I said, ‘It’s going to take a long time,’ but it happened very quickly.”

Houston Mayor Sylvester said the goal was to get hundreds of people in and out of the mega site every hour.

Other vaccination clinics were held Saturday by hospital systems in the Houston area.

Houston Methodist officials said about 4,500 people were vaccinated at their clinic.

Memorial Hermann Hospital also held a vaccination clinic in NRG Park for the third day. Hospital officials said more than 10,000 people have been vaccinated so far.
