Ghanaian actress sentenced to 90 days in prison for posing nude for a photo with her 7-year-old son

An African actress has been sentenced to 90 days in prison after a court found her guilty of one charge of publishing obscene material and two of domestic violence. in a case that began when the woman posted on her social media a nude photo with her 7-year-old son.

Rosemond Alade Brown, also known as Akuapem Poloo, is a well-known actress from Ghana, a country with strong laws on explicit content that the authorities justify out of respect for national morality.

“Mother please, mother, please, mother please“These were the words of the actress when the court read her sentence, refusing the request of the lawyers requesting a non-custodial sentence.

The Court considered it necessary to reduce the prevalence of publications of materials with the potential to corrupt public morality in the country and which affected the best interests of children, the right to privacy and dignity, and the moral image of the country were reported to the media local.

Therefore, Judge Christiana Cann sentenced her to 90 days in prison.

The three accusations concern that period of deprivation of liberty, but the actress will serve them at the same time and not one after the other.

The actress initially pleaded not guilty to the charges when she was first charged in November last year, but later changed her guilt on April 14 this year.

After pleading guilty, the court postponed her sentence and placed her in police custody for a pregnancy test. This is legally binding in Ghana, whose laws provide that when a woman is convicted of an offense not punishable by death, the Court will order a pregnancy test unless she has good reason. to believe that the woman is postmenopausal.

Because the test was negative, the sentence was final.

The photo that catalyzed the case was published on June 30 last year, when Brown celebrated his son’s seventh birthday.

The accompanying message read: “I’m naked in front of you because that’s how I gave birth to you, so if you find me lying somewhere, don’t go over there, but look at me as your mother who brought you to life.”

The prosecution said the defendant’s behavior undermined his son’s dignity, among others.

Brown, said the prosecution, was arrested and, in her warning statement, admitted that she accidentally posted the nude photo with her son.

However, the prosecution claimed that Brown deliberately released the images. The Court considered something similar in its considerations, when it indicated that the actress acted deliberately and that, with it, it endangers the integrity of the minor.

The lawyer’s arguments mattered little, highlighting Brown as the only mother and the only support of the child. He also warned that the sentence could end the actress’ promising career and that she downloaded the material from her networks, issued a public apology and accepted the accusations, which were also her first crime.

“The court is upset that it posts nude photos on social media. There is no doubt that, apart from the cancer of rape, desecration, physical aggression, the publication of obscene materials is on the rise. Therefore, we need to defend our social values and deal with this cancer. The best interests of the child will be a primary concern of the court. “ Judge Christiana Cann said when she made the decision.

“A severe punishment will serve as a deterrent,” condemned.
