An MP from Angela Merkel’s party died after she crashed into a plane during a flight to Germany.
Karin Strenz, 53, was traveling from Cuba with her husband, said Eckhardt Rehberg, a parliamentary colleague of their center-right Christian Democratic Union party, according to the dpa news agency.
The plane made an emergency landing in Ireland, but rescuers failed to save Strenz, Rehberg said on Sunday. It was not clear what caused the death or why he visited Cuba.
The lower house of the German parliament, the Bundestag, said on Monday it was not traveling in official parliamentary affairs.
Prosecutors in Schwerin said they had opened an investigation to determine the cause of death, which is standard practice in such cases, and would seek assistance from Ireland. They said they were expecting an autopsy in Ireland.
Strenz has been a member of the German parliament since 2009, representing a constituency in the northeastern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
She did not intend to run for re-election in Germany’s September 26 elections. Earlier last year, Strenz and another lawmaker were targeted in raids by prosecutors investigating alleged money transfers from Azerbaijan.
