Gastric band surgery does not guarantee the ideal weight without a healthy diet, nutritionists warn

Overweight people, especially young people, opt for operations that reduce the size of the stomach, however, this procedure does not guarantee “ideal weight”, but follows a healthy diet, warned the Peruvian College of Nutritionists (CNP).

The dean of CNP, Lic. Antonio Castillo Carrera, indicated that it has become a fashion, in these pandemic times, that many young people opt for bariatric operations as an option to lose weight.

However, he explained that these procedures are aimed at people with morbid obesity and not overweight, ie overweight. Although many celebrities have chosen to undergo surgery, it is ideal, in the case of young people, to prefer a nutritional assessment and monitoring.

Antonio Castillo reminded that these operations are irreversible, and the patient must follow a strict nutritional regime to lose weight and remain stable. Because if the person thinks that the stomach is already reduced, he can eat what he wants, he was wrong.

What can happen is that you gain weight and do not tolerate the foods you eat, developing eating disorders, as well as tolerance to food and digestion, having problems such as reflux, “because your digestive system will not be as before.

The dean of the CNP recommended that, if you want to lose weight in a healthy way, it should be done in a sustained, appropriate and personalized way, which is given in the nutritional consultation with the nutritionist. It requires the patient’s commitment to follow a proper diet and physical activity, under the supervision of a professional nutritionist.
