State-of-the-art stock issues continue
A continuing headache for video game buyers remains the lack of state-of-the-art PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S platforms. to sell in minutes, inevitably leaving customers disappointed and frustrated.
However, adding anger to the mix is the addition of “scalpers”, individuals or groups who buy multiple consoles en masse, before offering them immediately for resale, often at extremely inflated prices. While scalping has been predominant in retail for decades, modern technology has made the practice more difficult to combat than ever before, thanks to the creation of bot software that automatically performs the sales process.
Earlier this week, the British retailer GAME took stock of its latest batch of PS5 consoles, all – naturally – sold in a double-fast time. Shortly afterwards, a scalper company took to Twitter to claim that it had successfully purchased more than 2,000 consoles for sale, using its bot software. Other Twitter users also claimed that they dropped several PS5 units, most with a flammable, antagonistic attitude, which makes the claims harder to believe.
After lobbying against a game of complaints against GAME for this result, the retailer contacted VGC to assure its customers that the state-of-the-art GAME ordering process remains blocked.
“PlayStation 5 continues to have a very high demand and this demand far exceeds the current offer,” said a GAME spokesman. “We have strong measures in place to ensure that maintaining our ‘1 per customer’ statement to enable as many individual customers as possible to buy successfully … All pre-orders are subject to automatic checks and order updates – so cancellations checks – take place after a customer receives a valid order confirmation email. At present, these orders are still pre-orders and, as such, no payments have yet been made from customers. Payments will begin once our order has been verified. “
As long as there is demand for any item – from consoles, to concert tickets, to limited edition clothing and even toys – scalping will remain a frustrating part of the online retail process. Finally, everyone who wants to buy a PS5 or an Xbox X / S series Vol you get the opportunity to do this sooner or later. But the rush of retailers seems to continue for the time being, a little different from all major console launches in recent decades.
