We like RPGs. You like RPGs. Everyone loves a good RPG, and 2020 turned out to be a fantastic year for them. Whether they were relaunched, full of new content or new experiences, which took the established franchises in new directions, there really was something for everyone. However, we simply need to find out what was the best of the best. Here are the best RPG games PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 of 2020.
We’ve lost track of how many times Final Fantasy VII Remake makes us smile like idiots during the launch, but that’s the power of this shockingly well-done remake. Doing the original Final Fantasy VII justice will never be easy, but somehow, Square Enix managed to regain the magic, while expanding on his world and his beloved character. Moreover, the combat system is exemplary – a real evolution of the tried and tested ATB formula of the series. Sure, this is just the first chapter in a new saga, but we can’t wait to see what comes next.

Demon’s Souls on PS5 is exactly the same game as the 2009 original, which means it’s still a pretty great RPG. Five vast and mysterious worlds host some of the most disturbing state-of-the-art gameplay possible right now, but you can conquer the inhabitants in any way possible. The build variety is off the charts in Demon’s Souls, with a long list of weapons and armor to customize your character and lots of stats to improve when you’ve gathered enough Souls to do so. It’s both the best game available on the PS5 right now and one of the biggest RPGs of 2020.

A game we started calling Yakuza: Like a Dragon Quest here in the Push Square office, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is one of the most interesting RPGs we’ve played in a long time. It takes everything we already like about the Yakuza – the realistic scenery, the brilliant characters, the captivating stories, the crazy side activities – and combines it with … An organized party adventure with battles in a row? Yes, and it works shockingly well. RGG Studio has taken a real risk with it and is bearing fruit in what is one of the most memorable and unique games of 2020.

Our 2017 game is back and it’s better than ever – despite the fact that it was already a 10/10 masterpiece. Persona 5 Royal is not only one of the absolute best RPGs on the PS4 – it is one of the best Japanese RPGs ever made. A total pleasure for the senses and enhanced to a degree where the original Persona 5 is completely redundant. Royal’s new ending is incredible, his new characters are fantastic, and his countless game improvements raise him to previously unimaginable heights.
