Game of the Year: # 2 – Final Fantasy VII Remake

GOTYFF7

Yes, it finally happened: 2020 was the year we actually received a remake of Final Fantasy VII. Good, part of one, at least. It may not cover the full story, but Final Fantasy VII Remake carries its love of the original game as a badge of honor. It’s a tribute to the classic Japanese role-playing game, as much as it’s a reimagining – but those of you who finished it will know that it’s somehow even more than that.

From the brilliantly crafted combat system to the gorgeous soundtrack, Remake does so many right things. It is both a powerful journey of nostalgia and a captivating adventure in itself, and it does a particularly amazing job of arranging a cast of characters already loved. It is a real achievement.

Now we are not saying that Final Fantasy VII Remake is perfect – it certainly has the right share of flaws – but there is no denying the large number of memorable moments that parade in front of the player. We’ll avoid wasting any of these moments here, but there’s no doubt that Remake has had a lasting impact on our views of the Cloud and the company.

And those fights with the bosses! It is fair to say that Remake has some of the biggest boss battles not only in 2020, but also on PS4 in general. I replayed the game several times just to relive some of these encounters and that also shows the power of the title’s seriously impressive fighting system, which combines action with turn-based commands quite perfectly.

So much could have gone wrong with the Final Fantasy VII Remake, but here we are, looking at a real competitor of the Game of the Year. A great game and, hopefully, the beginning of something special.

How we decide our game of the year: In December, our editorial team created a list of nominees for the Game of the Year, based on their own review scores and other factors. After much discussion, we narrowed down the list of nominees and asked the entire Push Square staff and the Push Square community to vote for their five favorites using a points-based system. The ten games with the most points by the deadline were then determined as our 2020 favorites.
