Four thousand Americans died on Thursday from COVID-19, the worst day of the pandemic to date

For the first time during the coronavirus pandemic, the United States recorded more than 4,000 virus-related deaths in one day. It’s the third day in a row that the country has surpassed its own one-day deaths – this time 4,085 Americans lost their lives in just 24 hours, according to figures from pandemic trackers at Johns Hopkins University. In comparison, in several countries – such as Japan, Australia and South Korea – far fewer than 4,000 deaths occurred during the entire pandemic. A further 274,703 US COVID-19 cases were recorded on the same day as the pandemic is accelerating across the country. In Arizona, one in 119 people tested positive this week, making the state, what health officials have called, the world’s newest “hot spot” for the virus.
