Former NFL coach Antwaan Randle El will be the Detroit Lions WR coach

The Detroit Lions went back to a former NFL player to complete their coaching team, hiring Antwaan Randle El to coach the team’s recipients.

Randle El has been an offensive assistant with Tampa Bay for the past two seasons, helping the team win the Super Bowl over Kansas City earlier this month.

The 41-year-old played nine years in the NFL with Pittsburgh and Washington, appearing in 143 games with 71 starts. He caught 370 passes for 4,467 meters and 15 touchdowns. He also returned for part of his career, with 26 rebounds for 288 meters and a touchdown.

Randle He played college defender in Indiana.

After retiring from the NFL, he became athletic director at Virginia Academy, a high school he helped start. Then, in 2019, he decided to become a coach.

Randle He becomes the latest former NFL player to join the Lions coaching team with head coach Dan Campbell, offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn, defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell, assistant head coach / coach Duce Staley, coach offensive line Hank Fraley and defensive assistant Kelvin Sheppard.

Campbell said this was unintentional as he reunited his staff.

“I didn’t get into this thing and I said I wouldn’t hire anything other than former players. That never crossed my mind,” Campbell said. “In my head, I said, who is the best guy I know in terms of the person I know as a remarkable teacher and coach. That was the criterion. I mean, those were always set standards and I swore I wouldn’t I was never I will hire the first coach and the second person I hired the first person and the second coach.

“So I refused, here’s what I knew, I refused to hire my friends who are regular coaches or the type I owe, but who is an average coach, but a remarkable human being. Because that’s how you get used to it. bonus I knew AG. It was a bonus that I knew A-Lynn, because these are outstanding human beings, who are outstanding coaches, so I just got into this thing by literally saying, “Where do I find the best boys? do you find the best boys? Who are the best boys? ‘”
