Follow the Hummer EV CrabWalk prototypes on a public road

One of the coolest features of the new GMC Hummer electric vehicles is the CrabWalk – but we haven’t seen it in action in the wild yet. Well, at least so far.

Basically, the “Crab Mode” allows all four of Hummer’s wheels to be applied sideways, so that when the throttle is applied, the powerful EV moves diagonally. Four-wheel steering reaches a whole new level and the whole goal is to use this mode to maneuver more easily around tough obstacles when you are off-road. I imagine he will also do a pretty wise party trick.

But someone sent a clip to The Fast Lane Truck on YouTube showing this way on a public road for the first time. You can watch it below:

So far, everything I’ve seen has been released directly by GM and digitally created or filmed on a closed circuit; you have to take all this with a grain of salt, because that doesn’t show anything in the wild.

However, this new clip shows a line of Hummer EV truck crabs walking through congested traffic. They are equally charming and terrifying parts, much like I always felt watching synchronized dancers. It shouldn’t be possible to move like that, but it is.

Whatever the case, it’s fun to have seen these trucks do their little dance on the road after what appears to be a successful day driven by dirt. I still haven’t seen what the CrabWalk feature looks like when implemented in the middle of an off-road obstacle route, but it’s probably only a matter of time.

But it also makes for a fun and road experience. I would love to see the faces of people who are not totally familiar with this feature when they first witness the crab jig on the road.
