Florida reports 12,000 new cases of COVID-19 as state continues to vaccinate seniors

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Ron DeSantis government visited an elderly center in Bay County on Sunday morning to provide an update on the state’s plan to launch vaccines.

DeSantis reiterated the state’s position to give priority to people aged 65 and over, as well as health workers and first responders. According to the state vaccination report, more than half a million people received the vaccine.

But the Seminole County emergency manager told Justin Warmoth of News 6 during The Weekly that there was still a long way to go.

“So far, we have received only 20,000 doses and the priority group from Seminole County [is[ somewhere in the range of 160 [to] 170,000 people, “said Harris. “So clearly not even a hand, not even 10% of what we really need.”

Across the state, DeSantis said demand for vaccines exceeds supply.

“If you can’t come in now, just stay here because not only will there be more opportunities in the future [as] we are getting more short-term vaccine that we want to get out, so you may be able to sign up very soon, ”DeSantis said.

DeSantis said the state is working with churches to vaccinate the most vulnerable. He also suggested that the pilot program with Publix, launched last week in Citrus, Hernando and Marion counties, be expanded.

“I can tell you I’m doing a fantastic job. All the seniors I spoke to are really excited about it, “DeSantis said.” We’ll make another announcement this week about expanding that footprint. “

The Florida Department of Health reported 12,313 new cases on Sunday, bringing the state total to 1,477,010 cases since March.

Florida reported 111 new virus-related deaths on Sunday. This means that at least 23,261 people have died from coronavirus across the state, including 346 nonresidents who died in Florida.

As of Sunday, there were currently 7,497 people with the virus hospitalized in Florida, according to the State Agency for Healthcare Administration.

Since March, 65,595 people have been hospitalized in Florida after coronavirus complications. This number includes 194 patients who were recently hospitalized because of the virus, according to the daily report of the health department.

Positivity rate

The percentage of positive results varied from 8.95% to 23.37% in the last two weeks and was 10.42% on Sunday

Health officials say the rate should remain between 5% and 10% to prove that a community has control over the virus and fights infections.

vaccinations

The Florida Department of Health recently began launching a daily report on statewide COVID-19 vaccines. As of Sunday afternoon, 558,326 people had been vaccinated in Florida.
