Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4, 2020) Music review for video games

Welcome to Morning Music, KotakuOngoing hangout for those who love video games and the great sounds they make. Today I’m going to think how amazing Final Fantasy VII RemakeThe music is, in particular, some of his new songs that were not in the original.

It took me a while to get in Final Fantasy VII Remake (YouTube / long game / VGMdb) and even more time to get to his complex arrangements of original PlayStation tracks, often amazingly simple and deeply affective. But in the end, they both conquered me. The music, like the game, is layered like sedimentary rock sheets that take years of history and expose it well to be able to appreciate, analyze and digest them today. Here is the new version of “The bright light of civilization“Playing for the first time when Jessie explains what Midgar to Cloud looks like after the game’s bombing mission:

If you have read any of Mine previous Morning The music entrances you know I’m a sucker for melancholy pieces and “Shining Beacon” develops the technological dystopia of the original while extracting the emotional resonance of watching the same human tragedies unfold again and again after decades of resumption Final Fantasy VII.

But I said I’m here to talk about some Final Fantasy VII Remakeoriginal scores, and I will do so. The years since the game’s launch in 1997 have seen Square Enix composers Masashi Hamauzu and Mitsuto Suzuki spread their wings with several of their own projects. Their work on Final Fantasy XIII the trilogy, in particular, was a highlight for the music of the series after the departure of the original series composer Nobuo Uematsu in 2004 and both brought the same flair and growing sophistication Final Fantasy VII Remake. Here’s HamauzuMoonlight Thievery“, Which plays at the beginning of the game when you are tasked with breaking into Jessie’s parents’ house to steal her father’s Shinra card.

It’s cold and relaxing and yet so much happens, from drums and maracas to harps and bells. The remake is about exploring the roads left unheated in the original, and “Moonlight Thievery” is a perfect set of meals to get out of the outskirts of Midgar and see the other side of the class division of the corporate metropolis. After all, there is a reason why Shinra has so much free reign to destroy the planet and grind the poor into dust: it makes the lives of many other people extremely comfortable.

Then there is “The train cemetery. ”I was initially postponed because in the original“ Shining Beacon ”songs in this section. However, for the remake, Hamauzu’s new song is ideal. It features his gorgeous and subtle piano work and his penchant for picking up even the darkest pieces with shiny harp jerks and bells. It reminds me a lot of his underrated work on Dirge of Cerberus.

Suzuki’s contributions are a little weirder and more optimistic. Jazzy’s twist on “Wall Market“The theme is completely different from the original, but still excellent. Although my favorite is “The highway collapsed“Playing as Cloud and Aerith make their way through the tunnels connecting Sector 5 through 6. The kokyū strings set it in motion, followed by a windy ambient electronic section, with the song ending in a frantic synthesis breakdown. which makes him feel like you. ”Play through the slums of an ancient arcade (suitable because this is the section where Cloud has to navigate old crane-like robotic arms to help clear the way).

Okay, there are a lot of songs, but I have to mention one more thing before I leave you: “Reward due. “It is based on Nobuo Uematsu’s original composition for the Wall Market, called”Oppressed people, ”With the new version arranged by Naoyuki Honzawa. It is so different from the original that I consider it a new piece of original music and it is a bona fide banger:

It’s sleek and full of mini-vocal samples, with all sorts of other good stuff mixed in there as well. The regular version is a nice downtempo rhythm to walk on the bottom of Midgar, but the fight remix takes it to another level. More club music in me Final FantasyPlease. I ask for no less than an entire DJ mini-game, once the sequel will take us to the Gold Saucer.

And so much for this morning’s music! How I wrote about a bunch of us Final Fantasy VII Remake music and not to mention “Gol“The only new song he composed?” I do not know. Shame on me. It is excellent. Man is a master. Imagine creating one of the best video game soundtracks ever, and then coming back decades later to add a new song that’s just as amazing and just as appropriate, completely arranged. I can not either. And yet he did. What song does Uematsu make you go through the day?
