Fernando Tatis Jr. agrees with Padres’ Megadeal: 14 years old, # 40M $

Fernando Tatis Jr. and the San Diego Padres on Wednesday agreed to a 14-year deal with $ 340 million, confirmed Joel Sherman of The Post.

The 22-year-old shortstop has an average of .301 to go along with 111 hits, 39 homers and 98 RBIs in the two seasons with San Diego, a total of 143 games.

The deal makes Tatis the highest paid shortstop and the third highest paid major league player in history. Mike Trout ($ 426,500,000) and Mookie Betts ($ 365,000,000) are the only players with larger contracts.

It will also be the longest contract signed in MLB history. Giancarlo Stanton, now with the New York Yankees, signed a 13-year deal with $ 325 million with the Miami Marlins in 2015. Bryce Harper signed a 13-year, $ 330 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2019.

Tatis, who has two years of service, would have been eligible for salary arbitration for the first time in the next off-season. Although his business set a length record, Tatis could have left dollars on the table if he continued his stellar trajectory. His average salary of 24.29 million dollars will occupy only the 19th place in this sport.

Tatis, who flourished in a superstar for the Padres, was a major factor in San Diego, ending a 13-year playoff drought in 2020. San Diego also won a wild card against the St. Louis Cardinals. Louis before the Padres were swept by rival Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Division Series.

This is just the latest in a series of big moves the Padres have made this season. They acquired pitchers Yu Darvish and Blake Snell in transactions with Cubs and Rays respectively.

The Padres also signed versatile Jurickson Profar, who played five positions for San Diego last season.
