FEMA agreed to allocate $ 3.7 billion to repair AAA facilities damaged by Hurricane Maria

Washington DC – The Federal Agency for Emergency Management (FEMA) has approved the allocation of $ 3.7 billion to rebuild the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) facilities damaged by Hurricane Maria.

Both Governor Pedro Pierluisi and Washington Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González said outgoing FEMA chief Peter Gaynor called them to provide the information.

“These funds are needed to build a modern and efficient infrastructure for our Puerto Rican people,” said Commissioner González.

The $ 3.7 billion would be added to the $ 11,524 million agreed in September for the permanent repair of the electrical and educational system structures following Hurricane Maria.

The projects will be funded through section 428, in which the costs of permanent works must be determined.

On the 24th, then director of the Office for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resilience (COR3) of Puerto Rico, Ottmar Chávez Piñero, reported that FEMA was extending the period to December 31 of this year. to settle under section 428.

Those deals were originally said to have been reached in October 2019.

In mid-December, Commissioner González had indicated that the allocations for AAA had been agreed and that it would be announced by Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced and White House Coordinator for Puerto Rico’s Reconstruction, Peter Brown.

But Vázquez Garced ended his duties without announcing the final agreement on the AAA’s contracts.
