FDA extends recall of Sportmix pet food from Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. after the death of 70 pets

NEW YORK – FDA expands recall of dry pet food after more than 70 pets died and dozens more became ill.

Pet food manufacturer Sportmix first recalled several products last month after it was discovered that it may contain deadly levels of a type of mold.

Since Monday, the FDA has said it is aware of more than 70 pets that have died and more than 80 that have become ill after eating Sportmix pets.

The FDA says not all cases have been officially confirmed as aflatoxin poisoning by laboratory tests or reviewing veterinary records.

But now the company is adding corn-containing products to the recall list.

Some of the reported symptoms include fatigue, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice and diarrhea. In some cases, pets may have liver damage, but no other symptoms.

Pet owners should stop feeding pets with withdrawn products and consult their veterinarian, especially if their pet shows any signs of illness.

Many of the following pet foods have been recalled if the date / batch code includes an expiry date on or before “07/09/22” and includes “05” in the date / batch code, which identifies the products manufactured in the Oklahoma plant:
