A New Mexico official – who co-founded the Cowboys for Trump group – was arrested by the FBI on Sunday for his alleged role in the Capitol uprising.
Couy Griffin, an Otero County commissioner, was arrested after filming himself on the steps of the Capitol the day a mob of Trump supporters attacked the legislative building, the federal government told KVIA-TV.
At a meeting of the commissioners on Thursday, Griffin vowed to return to Washington, DC on inauguration day, armed with rifles to “embrace” the Second Amendment, the outlet reported separately.
Griffin had called the siege of the Capitol “a great day for America,” the report said.
“People have shown that they have had enough. People are ready for fair and legal elections, or this is what you get. You’ll get more of it, ”he said from the Capitol on January 6.
Griffin had said he had not harmed or attacked anyone on the day of the riot.
The Attorney General of New Mexico called on Griffin to resign on Sunday night.
“I demand that Couy Griffin immediately resign from the Otero County Commission or my office will request his resignation,” said Attorney General Hector Balderas. wrote on Twitter.
It was not immediately clear what allegations Griffin will face.
His group, Cowboys for Trump, supports the president “and his Make America Great Again policy,” the website said.
