Dr. Anthony Fauci said Wednesday that about 20,000 pregnant women received the COVID-19 vaccine “without red flags.”
The top infectious disease expert announced the update at a White House briefing on Wednesday, adding that both the CDC and the FDA are monitoring the situation.
Guidance for pregnant women receiving the coronavirus vaccine varied as they did not participate in either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine studies.
But Fauci said Wednesday that clinical trials on the COVID-19 vaccine for pregnant women and children are underway, with more to come.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that pregnant women discuss with their healthcare provider the decision to get vaccinated.
However, the World Health Organization does not recommend that pregnant women be given COVID-19 unless they are at high risk of exposure.
